Randomizing reward using food.

In order to help facillitate the learning process, it is important to make sure your dog is hungry before training. This hunger feeling will cause your dog to be more willing to "work" for his treats. Also, you should "randomize" your dog's rewards. This means don't always give him a high valued treat. Sometimes give him/her a lesser treat. This will continue to motivate the dog through the exercise. One caveat to this philosophy: when teaching your dog a new or difficult behavior, utilyze a high valued treat at first. By doing this it will be easier to capture the desired behavior and remain a positive process for your dog. After he/she proves consistency, you can begin randomizing their reward.
